Vinyasa flow yoga finds its roots in Pantanjali’s Ashtanga yoga, which translates to "eight-limbed" yoga. The eight limbs represent the following: Yamas: One’s ethics and sense of integrity Niyamas: Self-discipline and spiritual observations Asana: The physical postures practiced in yoga Pranayama: Breath control Pratyahara: Withdrawal of the senses; directing our attention inward Dharana: Concentration Dhyana: Meditation Samadhi: Enlightenment; becoming one with the universe Vinyasa is a method used in many styles of yoga, including but not limited to Ashtanga, power yoga, viniyoga, and Iyengar. In all styles of yoga that incorporate vinyasa, there is a mindful awareness of breath and movement, letting the breath initiate and guide the flow of movement from one asana to another. Vinyasa is an excellent form of yoga to cultivate inner awareness. As you focus on linking the asanas with the breath, your senses are drawn away from the external form of the poses and move inward to the nature of your breathing. This in turn initiates an intelligent internal deepening to each asana. Vinyasa yoga is a fun and invigorating way to free your mind, body and spirit.
